A
number of previous Childnet Award winners have used Chat
and Forums constructively and through well structured, password
protected and moderated sessions, Young people can discuss
issues with other young people (especially from other countries)
about a common interest.
Examples where Chat and forums
are being used constructively:

|
Animal
Diaries
An international website on animals which uses Chat
to link children in different schools with a famous children’s
author. Previous transcripts of Chat sessions with the
authors are included on the site. |

|
Environment
Online
An international website called ENO – (Environment
online) which aims to be a global virtual school for environmental
awareness. Already 50 schools, from every continent, have
joined the network and are active in studying the environment
locally and globally. The site has a carefully planned
moderated Chat timetable see eno.joensuu.fi with
archive of earlier Chat. |
For a fuller safety guide aimed at younger children see
the Childnet website www.kidsmart.org.uk.
A fuller safety resource on the subject of Chat rooms is
available at www.chatdanger.com and
the UK Government "Home Office" department has
set up a special Task Force which includes good practice
advice to those setting up Interactive services. Some of
the mentors/advisors listed in the mentors’ section
will be able to give advice on forums.
